Devotional thoughts from director, Dr Peggy Banks

 God, my refuge!

“Where does your security lie? Is God your refuge, your hiding place, your stronghold, your shepherd, your counsellor, your friend, your redeemer, your saviour, your guide? If He is, you don't need to search any further for security.” ― Elisabeth Elliot

Elisabeth Elliot was a Christian author and speaker. Her first husband, Jim Elliot, was killed in 1956 while attempting to make missionary contact with the Auca people of eastern Ecuador. She later spent two years as a missionary to the tribe members who killed her husband.[1]

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Mrs. Elliot many years ago when I was working in a church as a biblical counsellor. I was in seminary and so excited to meet such a giant in the faith. I still have the picture taken with Mrs. Elliot and my friend at the women’s conference we were attending. She was a wonderful woman of grace and confidence in the way she expressed her trust in God.

Mrs. Elliot impacted my life in a way that made me want to know Jesus more intimately, to believe and trust God alone as my refuge. At the time I met Mrs. Elliot, I was not trusting God alone for my refuge. There were many things that I would turn to in times of crisis. Many of these things were not so much places of refuge as they were places of destruction.

Where are you finding your refuge today? How could your life change if you found your refuge in God alone? What does it mean to you to find your refuge in God alone?

So many times, we find it difficult to understand why God would allow us or someone we love to suffer in pain, persecution, crisis, or trauma. Yet it is OK to cry out to God seeking him with all your heart for a way out. However, when there is no way out of the crisis, we can remember the words of King David in Psalm 62:5-8: “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress; I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honour depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”

Crying out to God is an act of our desperation and humility. When we cry out to God, we recognize that we need help, and we place our trust and faith in God’s love, mercy, power, and grace. We are putting our trust in God’s goodness and power to act on our behalf. It is a surrender without conditions (Ps. 86:11).

I pray that we may all walk in humility and surrender, growing in our trust that God alone is our safety, protection, Saviour, counsellor, friend, hope and healer for all eternity.
